Plan a cool waterfall weekend | Sg Chiling, Selangor
Updated: Apr 10, 2019
I find it boring to spent every weekend in a mall because all mall are overcrowded and there are so much sale and discount happening. I can easily go broke just in one day. So sometimes, I think it is better to spent a weekend at a waterfall where it is free, good for kids and so much fun.
Waterfall in Malaysia
There is a lot of waterfall place you can visit in Malaysia. Some are easy, some are moderate and some are difficult to access. This Waterfall of Malaysia page shares info about waterfall in Malaysia and they categorise the waterfall based on location and access difficulties. They also describe about the activities that can be done at the waterfall location.
Sg Chiling, Selangor
Chiling Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Selangor. To get on top of the waterfall, you need to walk for about an hour and wade across the Chiling River five times. Basically, you're gonna be wet even before you reach the top. However, since I love bringing my child and nephew to the waterfall, I decide not to hike. The water at the bottom of the waterfall is just nice and cold like on top of the waterfall.
Chiling Waterfall is located in a reserve called the Sungai Chiling Fish Sanctuary, a fisheries research project run by the Selangor State Fisheries Department. Unfortunately, on the day we go to the Sungai Chiling (19 January 2019), the fish sanctuary was close. However, there is a waterfall nearby. The carpark location is still the same but instead of going up, you just have to go down a few steps and there is a waterfall in front of you.
The river was great. The water was cool and clean. However, there are monkeys so beware of your food. Even if you pack nicely in tupperware or plastic, the monkey knows that it is food. So for me, since you don't have to hike, just leave your food in the car. Maybe eat it on the way there or on the way home ?
From KL, Sg Chiling is about 70 km. Thus it takes one to one and half hour drive.
There are no facilities like toilet or changing room provided at this area so don't forget to bring your sarong and clothes that are very easy to change.
Good outdoor activity for children
As I mention above, I love bringing my son and nephew to the waterfall. You can see that they are very curious. They ask about trees, where the water comes from, why monkeys like to take people food, why there is a lot of rocks, why the rocks are slippery, why there is a lot of rubbish and etc. Therefore, children learn lots of basic and fundamental information about how the world works in a very effective manner, and they are more likely to remember what they learned because it was concrete and personally meaningful.
Other than that, playing outdoor allows them to develop muscle strength, increase flexibility, fine and gross motor skills. A variety of sloped areas help children learn to adjust their balance on differing surfaces.
Outdoor environments fulfill children’s basic needs for freedom, adventure, experimentation, risk-taking, and just being children. However, special attention need to be paid to each children going to the waterfall as it might be slippery and the water might be just hard to handle for them.

How to prepare for a waterfall day-out
What to wear ?
For me, the most important type of cloth is lightweight so that it is easy to swim. Then, dark colour so that your undergarment is not visible after your cloth is wet. Lastly are a fast dry cloth so that you don't have to change after swimming as there is no changing room provided. And make sure your trunks, bikinis or scarf are secure so that it doesn't wash away by the waterfall's strong current.
For your feet, you can consider the rubber shoes or sturdy hiking sandals. Make sure your footwear has a good, threaded sole because you will have to walk over slippery areas.
What to bring ?
- Fast dry towel so that it not heavy and bulky to bring home.
- Sarong just in case there is no changing room then you can use the sarong to cover your body when changing in public.
- Easy to wear cloth. Bring the easiest cloth to wear and not a skinny jean where it is so hard to wear especially when there is no toilet and changing room.
- Insect repellent so that there is less chance your children being bite by the insect.
- Waterproof bag and casing to store your wallet, id card, phone, money and all valuables.
- Plastic bags to store your wet clothes and to take all the trash home.
- Sunscreen and cap to protect you from sunshine
- bottle water to drink when you thirsty
- light snack like raisins and nut as we don't want monkeys to go crazy on our food.
note : *things to brings and wear are suitable for easy access waterfall only
Last but not least, enjoy your day outdoor and "take nothing but memories and leave nothing but footprints"
Come share what other things you think we should bring when going to the waterfall
